It looks like we should use build -cZ . The capital Z is important.

And it looks like the timebuild.pl should not be used due to race conditions.

The source code itself. Honest, lawful open source projects won't probably gain anything from it even indirectly, but the source is available and people can peer into it. People will be able to fiddle with it, some may pick it up and do some changes (for example distributing and finishing the themes like the OS X one, or modifying its most beloved binaries (shame there is no space cadet to be found)). It's not very relevant for microsoft itself too, XP instances are still somewhat common but are never connected directly to the net anyway.

OK guys I got the build to work.
After I ran timebuild and it failed I re-ran build /z in the NT directory and it finished with 5 warnings.

It’s possible that build /z would work on its own but that’s the route I took.

just discovered that some files like exinit.c doesn't exist, and instead precompiled object files are used. this doesn't break anything, so shouldn't be much of a problem, but it does mean that we can't change the source code of those files (unless we reconstruct them).

Yes, sorta.

Follow the same build instructions, but before calling RAZZLE, do "set PROCESOR_ARCHITECTURE=x86". 16-bit tools won't work and you'll need to use a layer like https://github.com/cracyc/msdos-player to use those tools.

Alternatively, running Windows 10 x86 with VDM enabled works too.

IDK, you have to remember that some of the exploits that will be found in the XP source code probably still work in Windows 10. I think there's somewhat of a chance this will force Windows to make XP opensource so they can get people to fix the flaws for free and incorporate it into the proprietary Windows 10, just at the cost of making XP open source, but never having to support it themselves ever again.

Another thing is that Microsoft cares much less about the Desktop than people think. Azure is their big cash cow now. Honestly I think they've realized they were inevitably going to loose the desktop to FOSS and where just milking it all they can while they still could, and now they're beginning down the path of moving their Desktop "Windows XX" to opensource.

Basically I think what M$ is trying to move to is just letting their desktop go opensource so they don't have to deal with it, then lock people into *aaS and the .NET environment. The last one is a must for me. Getting higher encodes to work and maybe adding a metadata option would be great. Honestly just making a Windows XP Libreelec edition would be amazing.

They're real developers, but they're not paid by anyone, so this makes them somehow "garage" contributors, volunteers if you prefer.

Now they will have to check every pull request to confirm it's free from Microsoft's garbage. Every single contributor, who just peeked at the code can be a potential threat to the project. Do you really think this isn't an issue?

Maybe so because of the amount of work that would be needed to actually port it. But maybe using some of the resources from the leak could be used in some projects.
